Why is Apple CarPlay draining your phone battery?

Apps for navigation, messaging and music all show up right on your car's infotainment screen, alongside utility apps like EV charging locators. The system is everywhere, from Chevrolets to Volvos — there are currently more than 800 vehicle models equipped with CarPlay. The expanded CarPlay Ultra can hook even deeper into your car to handle settings like climate control, though it's currently exclusive to ultra-luxury vehicles. There's a catch, though: the whole system leans entirely on your iPhone to function. A road trip with Waze running for an hour, or a few hours of Spotify streamed over cellular, and the battery hit becomes hard to ignore. Apple forums and Reddit threads are full of the same complaint: CarPlay drains the phone's battery. How does CarPlay affect your iPhone's battery? Hadrian/Shutterstock CarPlay's battery drain comes down to where the processing happens. The interface on your car's screen isn't rendered there; instead, your iPhone renders and the car display acts as a monitor. Icons, maps, album art and the rest of the interface is powered from the phone and streamed to the dashboard. That puts CarPlay in a different category from Bluetooth audio, which barely uses the device's processor. The way you connect your iPhone to your car also has a big impact on battery life. Yes, wired and wireless CarPlay offer the same features, but using it wirelessly comes at a cost. No cable means your iPhone is powering CarPlay solely on battery, so it's using more power while also not charging in the first place.  Even the apps you use on CarPlay can drain your battery faster. GPS apps like Apple Maps and Waze that ping your location continuously are especially demanding on long drives. Streaming music all the time also uses battery. And if you're driving in areas with poor mobile coverage, your phone has to work harder to power these tools as it constantly searches for a signal. A wired connection keeps your phone charging the whole time CarPlay runs. If you're worried about long-term battery health, CarPlay will respect the charging limit you've set under Settings > Battery > Charging on your phone. When a wireless setup is your only option, a few tricks can help save some battery life. Make sure you turn off your iPhone's screen, since it can unnecessarily stay on while powering CarPlay. Enable Low Power Mode on your phone to avoid unnecessary background processes while driving.  Cars that support wireless CarPlay may also include a wireless charging pad. This can help, even though wireless charging isn't as efficient as wired. Another workaround is to download your favorite playlists or new podcast episodes to reduce your mobile data usage and reliance on changing cell towers. It's also a good idea to avoid using navigation apps when you know the route, since that prevents GPS from being on all the time.  Keeping your iPhone up to date with the latest software is important, too. Since CarPlay runs though iOS, any battery usage improvements Apple makes to CarPlay come with new versions of the operating system. That's one more reason to keep iOS updated, even if you're not getting new features.
